The Dove Bug - famous email virus

THE DOVE BUG brought the Pigeon Conspiracy to the attention of just about every media-aware person on earth. Its emergence is regarded as the watershed point in the growth of the Pigeon Conspiracy.

The virus, like many of its kind, propagated itself by means of a Visual Basic script attachment that - when the message was opened - ran through the user's contacts list in Microsoft Outlook and forwarded itself to all the contacts. This simple device led to the exponential spread of the virus, and within a matter of half a day from the the first reports of the virus it was estimated to have achieved 68% coverage of all the mail hosts connected to the Internet.

Conservative estimates place the number of people who read the contents of the Dove Bug in the two to three days it was present in mailservers at 1.1 billion, or over one sixth of the world's population. Anti-virus firms were quick to issue an antidote to the virus and a week after its emergence, it was almost completely eliminated.

However, the content of the Dove Bug was not forgotten. The email was a message from Richard Pierson - the purported Pigeon Conspiracy guru - suggesting that the Pigeon Conspiracy was a hoax. Fervent debate sprung up. Was Pierson being honest? Did he even send the message? Was this a ploy by the pigeon's hive mind to allay mankind's fears?

Arguments still rage today as to exactly what the Dove Bug meant. One thing is for sure, though - the Dove Bug transformed the Pigeon Conspiracy from an underground theory into a global phenomenon.
