Who is Richard Pierson?

Nobody knows who Richard Pierson really is - even whether that is his real name, or just a pseudonym. What we do know is that Pierson was responsible for bringing the Pigeon Conspiracy out of hiding and into the spotlight.

It started when he sent a series of cryptic emails to a select group of people all over the world, mostly knowledge workers in their 20s. This group is usually referred to as the "alpha group." The vast majority of the alpha group were intrigued by the snippets of informatiom coming their way and began to research topics such as the extermination of the passenger pigeon in North America in the 19th century and theories of collective mind behaviour in animals including bees, ants and, of course, pigeons.

As time went on, Pierson's messages became longer and more paranoid. He said that he was being watched and followed by pigeons. He seemed to be implying that it would not be long before they took control of him through hypnosis, as the Pigeon Conspiracy theories suggest.

Then came the Dove Bug, Pierson's flawed note of denial sent out as an email virus in which he claimed that the Pigeon Conspiracy was groundless. Overnight, the conspiracy became anything but that.
